Types of bruxism?

Jaw clenching and teeth grinding occur mainly due to genetic, physical and psychological factors. These common conditions are termed Bruxism and can lead to headaches, pain, teeth damage and jaw problems in the future.

Bruxism has two main types, Awake and Asleep.

Awake Bruxism is mainly caused by psychological issues such as anxiety, anger, stress, tension, deep concentration and frustration.

Asleep Bruxism is mainly caused by sleep-related chewing activity.

Signs and symptoms of Bruxism

  • Grinding and clenching of teeth while you sleep
  • Fractured, chipped or loose teeth
  • Tooth enamel wearing off, revealing deeper layers of your tooth
  • Excessive tooth pain and sensitivity
  • Pain and soreness in neck, face and jaw area
  • Ear and jaw ache despite not having problems with your ear
  • Dull headache, typically starts at the temples
  • Disrupted sleep due to grinding and clenching of the jaw

Treatment options for bruxism

Healthcare providers typically diagnose bruxism based on a physical exam and your symptoms. Treatments may reduce symptoms of teeth grinding, relieving grinding and clenching of your teeth.

  • Help to relieve tension in the jaw area
  • Decrease the pain that occurs due to clenching and grinding
  • Help to relieve headaches that are caused by bruxism

Process

Based on your desired outcomes, a treatment plan will be developed after your consultation. Treatments are performed with minimal discomfort and no downtime.

Post-Treatment Care

You may experience minor bruising at the treatment site. Avoid lying down for four hours after the treatment. For the following 24 hours avoid strenuous exercise or massaging the treatment area.

Results

Depending on your treatment plan you are likely to experience results within one to three weeks after treatment. This should include reduced clenching, tension and headaches. The effects could last three to six months.
